ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraq’s transportation ministry is planning to roll out a national digital system that aims to register all taxis in the country, the ministry said in a statement.

Each taxi will be equipped with GPS and provided a unique electronic code, and each city will have its own unique color, the ministry said. This is “to provide safety and security for the taxi drivers and their passengers.”

The project – codenamed National Taxi Project - is set to commence implementation starting next month, and aims to model the success of a similar system in the Kurdistan Region.

Under the system, public servants will not have the right to register and own a taxi.

The system “will have a unified central data center,” according to Ahmed al-Moussawi, director general of the General Company for Private Transport Management, and the Iraqi government will provide an electronic sticker in each vehicle showing details about the taxi driver, the vehicle number, and the name of the province in which it is allowed to operate.

The ministry claimed that the new system is environmentally friendly since it will allow the distribution of taxis according to demand and areas of operation, as well as helping alleviate traffic. However, it did not provide specific details.
