ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Tuesday met in Baghdad, discussing the bilateral relations of the regional and federal governments.
“They touched on the general situation in Iraq and Kurdistan Region and exchanged views on mutual issues. Moreover, they talked about the federal government’s agenda, plan and strategy to boost economy and development in the whole Iraq,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
Several other issues concerning both governments were discussed and both leaders emphasized on “the continuation of talks between both sides in all fields in order to reach a sustainable solution in line with the Constitution and law,” added the statement.
Sudani’s office had a similar statement regarding the meeting.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday. He met with the chief of Iraq's Federal Supreme Court and the president of the Supreme Judicial Council earlier in the day.
Dilshad Shahab, the spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Presidency, said ahead of the visit that Barzani would discuss some pressing issues between Baghdad and Erbil such as the resumption of Kurdish oil exports, the Kurdistan Region’s share in the federal budget as well as the payment of the salaries of the Region’s civil servants.
The visit is President Barzani’s third to the Iraqi capital since April.
Last month, President Barzani paid two separate visits to Baghdad, where he met with Sudani and other Iraqi officials and leaders. The president also attended the meeting of Iraq’s ruling State Administration Coalition.
