ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received prominent Iraqi Shiite politician Hadi al-Ameri on Wednesday, to discuss the latest developments in Iraq and ways to enhance dialogue between the country’s various components.
Ameri leads the Fatah Alliance parliamentary bloc, which holds 29 seats in the Iraqi legislature, and is a senior member of the Iran-backed Shiite-led Coordination Framework, which brings together most of Iraq’s Shiite factions.
Additionally, Ameri heads the pro-Iran Badr Organization, which was founded in 1982 under the guidance of the late Shiite cleric Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim. The organization originally served as a military wing of the Shiite opposition during Saddam Hussein’s regime.
The two officials discussed “current political landscape and the overall situation” in Iraq, as well as “addressing shared concerns between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region, with an emphasis on fostering relations.” They also touched on the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad and ways to enhance them to contribute to “national progress.”
Both sides underscored the need to strengthen “dialogue and communication among all Iraqi factions, and work together to achieve stability and address existing challenges with a spirit of cooperation and national unity,” the statement added.
President Barzani and Ameri also discussed the current developments in Iraq and stressed the significance of protecting national unity while navigating regional and international challenges.
The Kurdistan Region’s President reaffirmed Erbil’s “commitment to ongoing coordination and collaboration with all national entities in Iraq,” and emphasized “the significance of supporting the federal government's initiatives to achieve security and stability and reinforcing national partnership, which ultimately benefits the entire country.”
