ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Renowned Kurdish singer Hani has begun filming her latest music video for “The Night” in Erbil, to be released “in the near future.”

"It is one of my most beautiful songs," she told Rudaw on Sunday. "I hope everyone will like it."

With her 23-year-old son Siamand Mohammadi producing and supervising the project, the video is set to be a family affair.

The lyrics of the song are an adaptation of a classic poem by Kurdish wordsmith Hemn, and its melody is composed by Arsh Salami.

The Saeed Mohammadi-directed video is set to mark a change in Hani’s creative direction, she says, one that will be “welcomed by all generations…because this work is different from what I’ve done before.”

Arriving on the music scene in the year 2000, Hani has been a politically outspoken artist ever since.

She has recounted the killing of civilians, enforced dress codes for women, and the sustained fight for rights under the current Iranian regime.

Facing creative limitations due to regime-imposed restrictions on women artists, Hani left Sanandaj, western Iran, for Berlin in 2004. While in exile, she became renowned both throughout Kurdistan and in the Kurdish diaspora.

In January 2018, Hani released ‘Azadi’ (Freedom), inspired by the work of famed Kurdish poet Hazha. The song was released in support of a wave of brutally suppressed protests across Iran that led to at least 21 protestor deaths and over a thousand arrests.
