ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Thursday offered assistance and condolences to his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sanchez, after flash floods in the eastern part of the country have claimed the lives of nearly 100 people.
Sudani expressed his “deep sympathies for the loss of lives caused by the recent floods in the city of Valencia, Spain,” read a statement from Sudani’s office.
The eastern part of the Spanish province received nearly a year’s worth of rain in about eight hours on Tuesday. The rainfall continued into Wednesday causing flash floods killing at least 95 people, AFP has reported, with more injured and missing.
“Prime Minister Al-Sudani conveyed Iraq’s solidarity with the friendly people of Spain during this difficult time,” read the statement, and the PM “expressed Iraq’s readiness to provide any necessary assistance to help mitigate the impact of this natural disaster.”
Spanish PM Sanchez has cautioned that the disaster is not over and has called on residents of the affected areas to follow advice of emergency services.
“Please heed the recommendations of the emergency services,” he announced in an address shared on X. “Right now the most important thing is to safeguard everyone's lives.”
The country is suffering its worst flood in decades, according to satellite imagery from the European Space Agency.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that its member countries are prepared to offer their support to coordinate rescue efforts.
