ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi received Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Monday to discuss the regional matter, notably the fight against the so-called Islamic State, or ISIS.
“Yesterday evening, the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi met Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, president of Egypt, to discuss combating ISIS and the outcome of political reforms made by Abadi in Iraq,” the Iraqi prime minister's office said in a statement issued after the meeting.
According to the statement, “Both sides emphasized the significance of strengthening bilateral political, economic and security relations in terms of combating the terrorists.”
Abadi said countries in the region should unite to fight radicalism in the region.
“The president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, reaffirmed his commitment to the unity of Iraq and its government in fighting the terror,” read the statement. “He wished that political reforms would rebuild a strong and new Iraq.”
The last meeting between Sisi and Abadi was in December when the Iraqi premier visited Egypt.
