ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Americans should choose the candidate who they like  rather than the candidate that will win, says a politician with the US’s Libertarian Party.

Executive director of the Libertarian National Committee, Daniel Fishman, spoke to Rudaw on Monday about the US’s impending November presidential elections, the policies and principles of the Libertarian Party, as well as the issues with right-left perceptions in American politics.

"If you vote for the candidate you really like the other two candidates will see that they did not get your vote, and they will become more like the candidate you like," said Fishman

Few parties in the history of the US have been listed on the ballot on account of the hard task of “collecting signatures” to be allowed to run for office, said the Libertarian.

According to him, this is a task “conspired” by Republicans and Democrats to complicate the process for Libertarians.

“In the last 75 years, Americans have figured out the best way to run an election is a business, so instead of running a positive campaign for individual candidates and having to run the new campaign for every candidate, now the political parties run a fear campaign” added Fishman.

“We’re trying to convince people that the argument between the right and the left is a lie; it’s actually a race between freedom and authority.”

The Libertarian Party is the third largest party in the United States, formed in 1971 and has participated in every subsequent presidential election. The party’s stated values include individual liberty, non-intervention, limiting powers of the government and market capitalism.

Across the United States “there are 200 elected Libertarians”, however, the Democratic-Republican domination of the political landscape has made it difficult for Libertarians to make headway in most elections.

The United States’ 59th presidential election is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 3.

When asked about his preferences on the two elected presidents, Biden and Trump, Fishman replied “it’s like asking a vegetarian what their favorite steak is.”
