ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Saturday met Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan at the Munich Security Conference where they discussed regional stability.

“It was a pleasure meeting my friend @HakanFidan to discuss recent regional developments,” President Barzani wrote on X.

The two “discussed relations between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with Turkey, as well as how to strengthen cooperation in the political, economic, and security fields, and highlighted the security and political developments in Iraq, Syria, and the region,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

They also stressed the importance of joint coordination in the field of security, according to the statement.

Turkey and the Kurdistan Region enjoy strong economic relations. Erbil relies on Turkish imports for domestic consumption and its economy is also heavily dependent on trade and investment with its northern neighbour.

The trade volume between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey is over five billion dollars every year.

President Barzani has met with numerous world leaders and officials since arriving in Munich on Thursday, discussing security concerns and the Kurdistan Region’s role in regional developments.

The Munich Security Conference is an annual event bringing together world decision makers, academics, and civil society leaders to discuss security issues.
