ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday spoke on the phone with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, congratulating him on his victory in Wednesday’s vote, according to statements from their offices.

Azerbaijan held a snap presidential election on Wednesday, with results showing incumbent president Aliyev winning a fifth consecutive term by garnering more than 92 percent of the vote.

President Barzani on Thursday spoke on the phone with Aliyev, congratulating him for his re-election.

“Nechirvan Barzani offered his congratulations to Ilham Aliyev on his victory in the presidential election, wishing him success in his activities,” read a statement from Aliyev’s office. “The head of state expressed his gratitude for the congratulations.”

President Barzani “stressed that the Kurdistan Region wants to develop relations with Azerbaijan and expand cooperation,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

Both sides recalled Barzani’s July visit to Baku where both leaders discussed regional developments and the importance of maintaining peace and stability.

“Fondly recalling their past meetings, President Ilham Aliyev and Nechirvan Barzani emphasized that these interactions contributed to the expansion of cooperation,” stated Aliyev’s office.

Over 6,000 Kurds were recorded to be living in Azerbaijan in the 2009 consensus, according to the London-based Minority Rights Group International. The human rights monitor estimated that the number of Kurds in Azerbaijan during the 1990’s was up to 200,000, but suggested that the massive drop is due to the large number of Azerbaijani Kurds that have assimilated into Azeri identity.
