ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his election victory, wishing for better bilateral relations.

“On behalf of the Kurdistan Region, I congratulate Prime Minister @narendramodi on his re-election. We look forward to continued progress in relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq with India,” President Barzani said in a post on X.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is led by Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won 293 seats in the 543-seat legislature, guaranteeing a majority. The alliance has formally announced its endorsement for Modi’s third term as the prime minister of the country. He is expected to be sworn in on Saturday.

The BJP won 240 seats, according to results announced on Tuesday following the six week election.

His failure to constitute a majority in the parliament means he has to rely on his partners to proceed his agenda.

Thousands of Indians live in the Kurdistan Region. India has a consulate in Erbil.

Many world leaders have congratulated Modi for his election victory.
