WASHINGTON DC - Congressman Joe Wilson said on Tuesday that every efforts should be made to make sure that Iranian influence in the Middle East is reduced.
"Every effort we should make to reduce Iranian influence, and I am very confident as we see the people of Syria being successful in removing the Iranian influence that ultimately the Iranian influence was just negative toward peace and prosperity in the region, instability in the region. I am just so hopeful for the people of Iraq,” Wilson told Rudaw.
Iran was a staunch supporter of Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime, which was toppled by a coalition of rebel groups spearheaded by the Islamist Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) on December 8.
Iran also has influence on other regional countries, including Iraq.
Tehran has not established relations with the new government in Damascus. .
In late February, Iran’s deputy foreign minister called on Damascus authorities to respect their pledge for an inclusive government in action.
In December, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani called on Tehran to respect the will of the Syrian people and warned them against “spreading chaos.”
David Schenker, former United States assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs stated on Thursday that the US might draw Iraq into the “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran.
