WASHINGTON DC - The heated exchange between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will have a very significant impact on transatlantic relations, a former US official said on Monday.

The heated argument occurred during Zelensky’s visit to the Oval Office on Friday. It has made headlines since then.

“With regard to American diplomacy and relations, the heated argument is going to have a very significant impact on transatlantic relations, on relations with NATO members, but especially on the future of Ukraine. It was very, very unnecessary. It was taken far too long. And based on what I saw, Zelensky is walking into a trap and Trump and Vance unloaded all their frustrations on him that they've had on Ukraine,” Vincent Campos, former public diplomacy officer at the US State Department, told Rudaw.

In the history of American diplomacy, this is the first time such an event has occurred, but it may have lasting consequences for many years to come.

The Democrats aim to reclaim a congressional majority in two years and retake the White House in four years.

They strongly condemn the current diplomatic strategy, while Republican lawmakers back Trump's policy.

Roger Williams is a Republican Congressman. He claimed that Zelensky made an error.

“I think it showed the other day that America Is in charge. America needs to be in charge, socially, economically, militarily, spiritually, you name it. And I think it showed the world that we want a safe world. We want to end wars. Zelensky made an error, judging how he thought he should deal with the president. But I think at the end of the day, the deal will be made and we'll move on and get this war ended and get the economy going,” he said.
