MOSCOW, Russia - Moscow residents and tourists flock to skiing and ice skating areas on New Year’s Eve.
Alisiya came to Moscow with her mother from Vladivostok, the most remote region of Russia situated near North Korea, for the Christmas holidays. Her favorite sports activity is ice skating.
"We came to Moscow from the far east for a vacation. I am ten years old and I have been learning figure skating since I was four. I like skating a lot and I want to be a professional skater," Alisiya said.
Skiing and ice skating are the most popular forms of entertainment for Russians during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
According to official statistics, more than 25 million people visit skating rinks every year in Moscow alone.
Russia's New Year celebrations come at a time when the country is gripped by inflation.
The inflation rate in Russia increased to 7.50 percent in November from 6.70 percent in October of 2023, the highest since Moscow's military invasion of Ukraine, due to the collapse of the ruble.
