ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A building owned by the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkey’s Marmaris city was attacked late Thursday night, marking the second attack on party property in the city in two weeks.
The building was attacked at around 2:00 am, and had its windows smashed, pro-Kurdish news outlet Mezopotamya Agency (MA) reported on Friday, not specifying whether the property was a party office. Party members reported the attack to authorities, according to the report.
A gunman attacked the HDP’s Marmaris district office earlier in the month. No injuries or casualties were reported.
“They want to create a perception that the HDP started the forest fires in Marmaris,” co-mayor Guven Goknar told MA, referring to forest fires raging across parts of Turkey.
The fires that have broken out in areas of southern Turkey, including in Marmaris and near the tourist hotspot Antalya, have killed at least four people and injured more than 180 others. Some Turkish nationalists on social media have taken to blaming the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) for the fires.
The HDP has been under pressure for years, accused of being the PKK’s political wing, a charge the party denies. Members of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), have called for the party's closure.
The Turkish Constitutional Court accepted an indictment requesting the closure of the HDP in late June.
A member of the party was killed in an attack on the HDP office in Izmir in June. The attack was condemned by both ruling and opposition parties.
Hundreds of HDP members and supporters are under investigation or in jail, including Selahattin Demirtas, the party’s former leader, along with his co-chair Figen Yuksekdag.
