ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) is urging its supporters to gather in Diyarbakir (Amed) and Van provinces on Thursday to await the anticipated "call of the century" from jailed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan.
"We invite all the people of the region to Amed to collectively welcome the honorable peace call that Mr. Abdullah Ocalan will make," DEM Party's Diyarbakir office said on X.
The gathering will take place at 6pm local time on Thursday," it added.
The party's Van office made a similar call.
A delegation of seven people are set to visit Ocalan on Thursday, which includes the DEM Party co-chairs and the veteran Kurdish politician Ahmet Turk, DEM Party spokesperson said on Wednesday.
In recent months, the DEM Party has been spearheading peace efforts between Ankara and the PKK. Earlier in February, a DEM Party delegation visited the Kurdistan Region and met with senior Kurdish officials, including Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, who then noted that the visit came at Ocalan’s request.
It is unclear whether Ocalan's message will be delivered in writing or through a recorded video.
However, DEM Party is reportedly setting up big screens in Amed and Van to allow people see Ocalan's message.
Hopes of a renewed drive for peace in the country were boosted in October with ultranationalist Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli shaking hands with members of the DEM Party lawmakers in the legislature. Bahceli also proposed inviting Ocalan to address the Turkish parliament and declare the dissolution of the group - considered by Ankara to be a terror organization.
