ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dismissed on Thursday US sanctions on his country as ineffective and said that the situation in Turkey was in fact improving by the day thanks to their reliance on Allah.
“Today, we are better than yesterday,” Erdogan told a crowd in Rize city. “Tomorrow, we will be better than today.”
“Do not worry about this,” he told his supporters. “There are various campaigns [against us]. Do not listen to these campaigns.”
He said that in the recent tit-for-tat row with the US Turkey got strength from God.
“Do not forget that if they have dollars we have people, righteousness and Allah,” said the Turkish president.
Erdogan told his supporters that they may face more difficulties, but reassured them that with “patience” they will prevail.
US-Turkish relations have soured in recent months over the imprisonment of American pastor Andrew Brunson on charges of supporting terrorism.
The US Treasury Department has since frozen the assets of Turkish justice and interior ministers to which Ankara retaliated by freezing assets of the US “interior and justice ministers - if any.”
On Wednesday however, a nine-person delegation representing Turkish foreign, justice, and finance ministries arrived headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal in Washington on Wednesday for talks with US officials on the recent tensions between the two countries.
“We held additional talks with Turkish officials. The conversations continue,” US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert told Rudaw.
