ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Wednesday announced that its jets had struck military positions of the Syrian army in the city of Daraa, south of the country, overnight, in response to a number of rockets fired from Syria toward the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

“A number of launches from Syria toward the southern Golan Heights were identified last night. In response, IAF [Israeli Air Force] fighter jets struck military infrastructure belonging to the Syrian regime,” wrote the IDF on X, formerly Twitter.

The state-linked Times of Israel said that three rockets had targeted the Golan Heights on Tuesday night, but hit open areas and did not result in any injuries.

The Golan Heights were previously controlled by Syria but were seized by Israel during the Six Day War in 1967 and annexed in 1981, although this is not recognized by most of the international community.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its 12-year civil war, often claiming to strike pro-Iran militias such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah group that supports the Syrian army.

Israel has intensified its strikes on Syria since October 7. It has attacked Syrian territory at least seven times since the start of the year, killing at least 21 Syrian army soldiers and wounding seven others, according to the United Kingdom-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
