ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish National Council (ENKS/KNC) is set to meet with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi under American and French supervision, amid calls for Kurdish unity and dialogue in Syria after the collapse of the Baathist regime, the council’s spokesperson said on Sunday.

“From our perspective, there is no issue, and we can meet [Abdi] in the coming days under the supervision of the Americans and the French. A meeting will happen soon,” Faysal Yusuf, the spokesperson for the ENKS told Rudaw’s Dilbixwin Dara in a televised interview.

Yusuf said that about a week ago Abdi told them he wanted to meet with the ENKS, however, they were awaiting a response from the US and France to supervise the meeting.

“I do not think there will be a significant delay. There is no problem on our side, and Mr Mazloum Abdi has already informed the Americans and the French,” he said.

The ENKS is an umbrella group of Kurdish opposition parties in northeast Syria (Rojava).

This comes amid calls for Kurdish unity in Syria, especially following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime earlier this month.

Following a meeting last week, the ENKS member parties stressed “the need for Kurdish unity and the importance of safeguarding Kurdish areas from further interventions or invasions.”

The participants also “stressed the urgency of engaging with authorities in Damascus to clarify the Council’s stance on Syria’s future. This vision includes constitutional recognition of the Kurdish people and their national rights within a decentralized Syria.”

A week earlier, Abdi called on Kurdish parties in Rojava to form a unified front ahead of national dialogue in Syria.

The calls for a unified Kurdish front come amid efforts to resume talks between feuding Kurdish parties in Rojava.

Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, the Kurdish National Unity Parties (PYNK) expressed readiness to return to talks with the ENKS. The PYNK is a coalition of 24 parties that have close ties with Rojava’s ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD) and have representatives in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES).

Faysal told Rudaw at the time that they were ready for talks, but they have not received a request from the PYNK.

Kurds were systematically discriminated against under the former Syrian regime. During the civil war, they carved out an autonomous area in the north where they sought to promote diversity and tolerance.
