ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish National Council (ENKS/KNC) in northeast Syria (Rojava) said on Monday that it was not consulted on a recent landmark meeting between Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) chief Mazloum Abdi.
"The council must convene, then we will announce our position on the agreement," ENKS spokesperson Faisal Youssef told Rudaw.
Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF chief Mazloum Abdi signed a milestone agreement on Monday to integrate the SDF into the Syrian state’s institutions.
The deal recognizes the Kurds as an integral part of Syrian society and includes a ceasefire across the country, as well as the return of displaced Syrians to their hometowns. It is set to be implemented “no later than the end of the year,” according to the Syrian Presidency.
The ENKS is an umbrella group of Kurdish opposition parties in northeast Syria.
Abdi welcomed the deal on Tuesday, stressing that the Kurdish-led force considers the agreement “a real opportunity to build a new Syria that embraces its components and guarantees a good neighborhood.”
Kurdish ruling and opposition parties in Rojava have repeatedly accused Damascus of marginalizing Kurds after they were not invited to a National Dialogue Conference last month or to sit on the committee tasked with drafting a constitutional declaration.
