ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The United States’ Syria embassy on Friday stated that it was “troubled” by attacks on the offices of a Kurdish opposition party in northeast Syria (Rojava), calling for an urgent end to the attacks.

“We are troubled by continuing reports of attacks on KNC [Kurdish National Council] offices in northern Syria and urgently call for these attacks to stop,” the US embassy in Syria stated on X.

Last week, the Kobane office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party - Syria (PDK-S), the backbone of the Kurdish National Council (ENKS), and the largest Kurdish opposition party in northeast Syria (Rojava) was attacked by suspected members of a group affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The embassy also called on the parties in the region to engage in dialogue to tackle the issues.

“We also call on all parties to engage in peaceful, meaningful discourse to advance the aspirations of the Syrian people without violence,” it said in its post on X.

The PDK-S was holding an event to commemorate the death of legendary Kurdish figure Mullah Mustafa Barzani in its office in Kobane when the attack took place.

A member of the party’s politburo was among several people injured, Sulaiman Oso, an ENKS official told Rudaw English. Much of the equipment in the office was also destroyed.

The Revolutionary Youths, a PKK-linked group, have been blamed for many similar assaults on ENKS and its members in Rojava in the past. The PDK-S office in Hasaka was attacked in July last year.

The group has not immediately commented on the incident.

The ENKS and Rojava’s ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD) have been at odds for several years, with the ENKS accusing the PYD of being unwilling to share power and of detaining their members. The PYD claims that ENKS, which is a member of the Turkey-backed Syrian opposition coalition, serves Ankara’s agenda.

Despite the two sides having met several times under American supervision, the dispute between them has yet to be settled.
