ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A suspected Israeli drone on Wednesday hit an ammunition depot in Syria’s western province of Latakia, a war monitor reported, with Israel recently intensifying its strikes in Syria against the backdrop of the war in Gaza and increased operations in Lebanon.

“A likely Israeli drone with the support of warplanes carried out strikes targeting an ammunition depot near the city of Jableh in Latakia countryside, near the largest Russian air base in Syria,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor.

The strikes on the warehouse “led to its destruction and huge explosions were heard,” the Observatory added.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its over a decade-long civil war, often claiming to target pro-Iran militias, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah group which supports the Syrian army.

Israel rarely confirms strikes attributed to it in Syria but has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate its arch-rival Iran gaining a foothold there.

The strikes have increased since October 7, when Palestinian Hamas militants launched an unprecedented, large-scale attack on Israeli territory that prompted significant retaliation.

On Tuesday, an Israeli strike in Damascus killed at least six people, the Observatory reported.

Israel has carried out 94 strikes on Syrian territory since the beginning of the year, killing 250 combatants and injuring 177 more, according to data from the Observatory.
