ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi security forces on Thursday confirmed the death of two Islamic State (ISIS) Walis or so-called governors in Salahaddin following an earlier air raid that targeted the militant group’s sleeper cells in the disputed territory.

The Salahaddin Operation Command on Tuesday carried out an operation that killed eight senior ISIS members in al-Tharthar valley west of Salahaddin, Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a statement.

The cell on Thursday revealed the identities of four of the the killed militants while identifying the ranks of only three as the Wali of Dijlah, Wali of Salahaddin, and the other as the financial officer of the terror group.

The revelation follows a series of DNA examinations, which is still ongoing to help identify the others.

ISIS seized control of swathes of Iraqi land in 2014. The group was declared territorially defeated in 2017 but it continues to carry out bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions across several provinces.

The terror group’s remnants are particularly active in parts of northern and central Iraq that are disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

In its propaganda al-Nabaa magazine published Thursday, ISIS claimed to have conducted seven attacks in Iraq from June 8 to June 14, killing and injuring 11 people.

The terror group also remains active in Syria as it continues to launch deadly attacks from the Syrian Desert, which extends from Damascus to the Iraqi border.

The US-led coalition announced the arrest of a senior ISIS leader, named Hani Ahmed al-Kurdi, during a raid in northern Syria early Thursday.

It launched four attacks in Syria from June 8 to 14, killing and injuring seven people, according to al-Nabaa.
