ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Registration will open on Tuesday for political parties, coalitions, and independent lists wishing to participate in Iraq’s November parliamentary elections, the electoral commission announced on Thursday.
According to a letter issued by the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), seen by Rudaw, the registration period will begin on April 15 and run through May 4 - a 20-day window for applicants.
The registration process is open to all parties registered with the commission’s directorate for parties and organizations, Imad Jamil, head of IHEC’s media team, told Rudaw on Friday.
"The registration will also include those who want to participate on an independent list," Jamil added.
Iraq’s governing State Administration Coalition on Thursday welcomed the government’s decision to hold the elections on November 11 without introducing any amendments to the electoral law - legislation widely seen as favoring larger, established parties.
In March, Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council extended IHEC’s mandate for another two years - the third time the commission’s term has been renewed.
