ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Iraqi ministry of interior announced on Friday that it will begin issuing electronic visas for select nations instead of visas on arrival.
“It has been decided, as of March 1, 2025, to stop granting entry visas (upon arrival), which include the permanent member states of the UN Security Council (5+1), the European Union countries, and the countries of Australia, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Switzerland, New Zealand,” read a statement from the ministry, adding that they will instead “start granting electronic entry visas at Baghdad International Airport” for nationals of these countries.
The permanent members of the United Nations security council are the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China.
Travelers can apply for the visa through an online portal.
The ministry said that Baghdad International Airport is ready to process electronic visas quickly and efficiently. Airlines have been urged to ensure that travelers obtain an electronic entry visa before their arrival to avoid any issues.
The goal of the change is to reduce congestion at the airport and expedite customs procedures.
It also contributes to strengthening control over the entry of foreigners into Iraq, allowing authorities to track travelers accurately and reduce the risks associated with irregular entry, according to Iraqi authorities.
