ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A woman was killed in Iran’s western Ilam province, allegedly by her husband, in the name of protecting family “honor”, a human rights watchdog reported on Tuesday.

Arezu Hosseini, a Kurdish woman from Eyvan town in Ilam province, was stabbed 100 times by her 40-year-old husband on Sunday, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reported.

Sources told Hengaw that Hosseini was “killed by her husband with an honor-based motive.”

Hosseini’s husband Javad Jafari placed her body in the trunk of his car and drove to the police station, where he surrendered himself.

Family honor is often used as a pretext for the murder of women and girls at the hands of their fathers, brothers, or husbands.

At least 122 women were killed across Iran’s provinces in 2023, 39 of whom were so-called “honor killings,” according to Hengaw. At least 60 women were killed by their husbands, and nine by their ex-husbands.

In March, Ziba Sayadi, a 27-year-old woman, was shot dead by her ex-husband in front of her classmates in West Azerbaijan province. Sayadi’s lawyer and psychologist claimed that the woman was continuously abused by her husband and his family throughout the marriage, which ended ten days prior to her death.
