ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Legendary Kurdish artist Brayim Ghaderi from Iran’s Kurdish city of Mahabad passed away at the age of 90 on Tuesday after suffering from health issues.

“This folk music artist had been hospitalized at Imam Khomeini Hospital in Mahabad for several days due to an illness (stroke) and was transferred to Urmia yesterday for further treatment,” Siamand Javanbakht, head of Mahabad's culture and guidance department, said on Wednesday.

Ghaderi was born in Isa Kand village, located in Mahabad in western Iran (Rojhelat), in 1934 to a family with a strong artistic background.

“Despite the numerous efforts of the medical staff, this renowned artist ultimately could not resist the illness and passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 90,” Javanbakht added.

The uniqueness of the Kurdish singer lay in his contribution to the traditional Kurdish music genre known as band.

He produced nearly a hundred original works and performed countless covers of other Kurdish songs.

He enriched Kurdish culture through his artwork by performing Kurdish nationalistic music and folklore music characterized by energetic melodies.

His father Karim Ghaderi was also a Kurdish folk singer and inspired his son to follow the same path.

Ghaderi also had joint artworks with several other renowned Kurdish artists such as Hemin Mukriyani and Hassan Zirak.

In the 1970s, prior to the Islamic Revolution in Iran, he served as a clerk at the ministry of culture, documenting numerous recordings in Radio Mahabad.

Ghaderi was mostly known for his band, Ey Delen Derje Derje [They say it pours pours].
