ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani is set to meet with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, a senior official from his office announced.
Aziz Ahmad, Barzani’s deputy chief of staff, revealed the planned meeting on X and said that it comes “against the backdrop of the Prime Minister’s recent talks with leaders in Jordan, the UAE, Turkey and Bahrain.”
“The focus remains on deescalating tensions and further conflict in the Middle East, and exploring how the KRG [Kurdistan Regional Government] could help foster greater understanding and cooperation, including on the rights of the Kurdish people in Syria,” Ahmed stated.
The anticipated meeting comes with the Kurdistan Region taking a more active role in mediating tensions between northeast Syria’s (Rojava) ruling and opposition groups.
On Friday, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani held a historic meeting with Mazloum Abdi, chief of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in Erbil to discuss Kurdish unity talks and the latest developments in Syria.
The Kurdish unity talks are aimed to ensure that Syrian Kurds head to Damascus with a united voice to negotiate with the new Syrian authorities, led by the Islamist Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former al-Qaeda affiliate, which toppled Bashar al-Assad’s regime in a blistering offensive on December 8.
