ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The United States military on Wednesday shot down three Iranian drones in the Gulf of Aden near Yemen, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said, adding that ten one-way drones of Iran-backed Houthi rebels were also downed.

“At 9:10 pm, the USS Carney engaged and shot down three Iranian UAVs in its vicinity,” CENTCOM said in a statement. No casualties or material damages were reported.

American forces also “conducted strikes against an Iranian-backed Houthi UAV ground control station and 10 Houthi one-way UAVs,” another statement from CENTCOM said.

Yemeni Houthi rebels have carried out numerous attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, disrupting vital commercial waterways. The US and the UK have also launched airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in retaliation.

Washington has been entangled in the recent uptick of violence and tensions in the region since Israel began launching airstrikes on Gaza on October 7, in response to a large-scale air, ground, and sea incursion into Israel by Palestinian Hamas militants.

US troops in Iraq and Syria have come under attack over 165 times since. Most of the attacks have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group comprised of Iran-backed militias, in what they say is a response to Washington’s support for Israel.
