ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Lufthansa airline will soon resume service to Erbil, Germany’s general consul to Erbil said on Tuesday, without giving a date for the resumed flights.

German consul Dieter Lamle made the announcement on Tuesday after a meeting with Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani. The German airline had suspended flights on March 23 without giving a reason. Around the same time, Emirates and Etihad airlines suspended flights over security concerns.

Lamle also praised the role of Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the military campaign against the Islamic State. He expressed gratitude to Kurdish security forces for the arrest of a suspect in a car bombing in Erbil's Ainkawa neighborhood on Friday.

Lufthansa suspended flights to the Kurdistan region and Iraq last year after the ISIS jihadists overran larges swathes of the country. Germany's flag carrier usually flies twice a week from Frankfurt.
