ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Erbil-based University of Kurdistan Hewler (UKH) held its third annual alumni reunion on Saturday, bringing together nearly a thousand graduates to strengthen alumni networks and community ties.
“The University of Kurdistan [Hewler] always maintains contact with its graduates, and today's event is one of the steps that the university continuously takes to stay connected with its graduates,” Karokh Nuraddin, Director of Public Relations, Media and Communications at the UKH, told Rudaw on Saturday.
“For example, we now know where all the graduates are, where they live, what they do, whether they are unemployed or seeking work - and most of this information is gathered through the application,” Nuraddin added, referring to the Alumni Association application which gathers all the alumni of the university. The application is designed to help graduates easily connect and maintain links with the UKH alumni network.
The Alumni Association fosters a dynamic and engaged network of graduates and supporters across the Kurdistan Region and beyond, maintaining strong ties with the university through a range of activities and events, the university states on its website.
Srusht Burhan is a graduate of the UKH. She said the courses she received from the university helped her secure a job.
“I graduated in 2023 and now work at the Nishtman Strategy Institute. This opportunity came as a result of the self-confidence instilled by the education at the University of Kurdistan. Thanks to the connections the university helped me build, I was able to find a job immediately after graduation,” she said.
The UKH was opened in 2006 and is one of the Kurdistan Region’s most prestigious universities, offering undergraduate and graduate programs in English. It was established by Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani during his tenure as prime minister and is affiliated with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
To date, the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr has awarded 2,554 degrees, according to Nuraddin.
The head of the university’s public relations also said that 85-90 percent of their alumni have been employed in both public and private sectors.
