ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday received Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov in Erbil where they discussed a range of topics, including strengthening bilateral ties and Russian investment in the Region.
A statement from Barzani’s office noted that the two officials touched on Erbil-Baghdad relations, regional stability as well as the latest developments in the Middle East, including the evolving events in Syria. The statement further quoted the Kurdish president as affirming the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to expanding ties with Moscow, noting the contributions of Russian companies, particularly in the energy sector. Barzani also expressed gratitude for Russia’s support during challenging times.
Iraq and the Kurdistan Region share long-standing economic ties with Russia, with several Russian oil companies operating in both the Region and in southern Iraq. Diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to 1944. Prominent Russian oil and gas companies Lukoil, Gazprom Neft, and Rosneft are some of the major Russian companies active in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
The statement from the Kurdish presidency added that the two officials emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in Iraq and resolving issues between Erbil and Baghdad. Barzani and Bogdanov also discussed the results of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections held last October after much delay. Negotiations are currently underway among parties to form a new cabinet. A final agreement has yet to be reached.
The Kurdish presidency added that the two officials voiced their support for peace and stability in Syria, stressing “the need to protect the rights of Kurds and all communities” there. They highlighted “the threat posed by ISIS in Iraq and Syria, advocating the importance of preventing its resurgence.” ISIS has sought to exploit security gaps in Syria following the fall of Bashar a;-Assad. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have played an instrumental role in the fight against ISIS.
Russia emerged as a key powerhouse in the region following its support for Assad. The latter tactic contributed to enhancing Moscow's influence in the Middle East. Russia also maintains amicable ties with Iran, another important player in Iraqi politics. However, the ongoing war in Ukraine has significantly strained Russia’s military and economic resources, apparently contributing to weakening of the Assad regime.
