ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday commemorated the 34th anniversary of the Region’s uprising against the former Iraqi regime, calling for protecting the achievements that Kurds gained through unity and solidarity.

“The uprising was a pivotal moment in history, showcasing the unwavering determination of the people of Kurdistan in their fight against dictatorship and oppression. Driven by a firm conviction in the righteousness of their cause, they united in pursuit of liberty, dignity, and justice, paving the way for a new future,” Barzani said in a statement.

The town of Ranya was the first to rise up against the regime of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein on March 5, 1991. The revolt quickly spread across Kurdish towns and cities, resulting in the expulsion of the Iraqi army from most of said locations, creating room for the establishment of a Kurdish parliament in 1992.

In the statement, President Barzani urged for “unity, solidarity, and mutual understanding among all factions and communities” to safeguard the achievements of the uprising.

“This movement was the culmination of a prolonged struggle and significant sacrifices made by the Peshmergas and the citizens of Kurdistan in their quest to secure their rightful entitlements in the new Iraq,” he stated.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also commemorated the Raparin anniversary. “This day will stand as a symbol of resilience and freedom in our history,” he said on X.
