ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - China’s consulate general in Erbil is constructing a new park in the city that is expected to be completed within 90 days, an official said on Wednesday, with the park already 40 percent complete.

“This park is being built in the Naz Naz neighborhood of Erbil city. The park is in Chinese style; meaning they are building it according to their culture and construction has begun,” Sarwar Waysi,  head of the parks’ engineering in Erbil, told Rudaw on Wednesday.

The construction of the park is set to be finished in 90 days and is “approximately 40 percent complete,” Waysi added.

The Chinese Consulate is sponsoring the project, which is also supervised by the Kurdistan Region’s foreign relations department and the municipality and tourism ministry.

“The cost of building the park is the responsibility of the Chinese consulate. The Kurdistan Region's foreign relations and Ministry of Municipality supervise it,” he said.

The park is located on Naz Naz Street in Erbil.

In 2014, China’s consul general to Erbil expressed  Beijing’s willingness to work with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on reducing pollution based on China’s history with what he described as a “very big headache.”

Erbil has one of the highest levels of air pollution in Iraq. There are several causes, most notably, plumes of smoke from electricity generators and a large amount of cars using low-quality fuel.
