With the onset of the fall season and pomegranates maturing, all eyes are on Halabja.
The people of Halabja, in order to introduce showcase their pomegranates, annually organize a festival to exhibit the seed-bearing fruit in its different varieties.
Halabja is known for its "salaxany" pomegranate. The province, known internationally for the genocidal campaign by the previous Iraqi regime, introduces large quantities of the produce to Kurdistan's markets annually.
The fruits from Sazan village are said to be the most delectable.
Pomegranates are eaten fresh, turned into juices, syrups and used in pickling.
