SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — Sulaimani’s old silo will be razed in a controlled demolition using explosives. A tourism project is set to replace it.
The controlled demolition will be done by an international company [on Friday] under the auspices of Kurdish governmental officials and a US company will monitor it, Mala Yaseen, the Spokesperson of Investor’s Union, wrote in a Facebook post.
“A business, settlement and tourism project named Down Town will be created, creating hundreds of job opportunities for Sulaimani,” Yaseen added.
The silo was built by Iraq’s Baathist regime in the 1980s to collect the province’s wheat production. It was abandoned, however, during the Iran-Iraq war.
It has become a recognizable landmark in Sulaimani, the capital city of the province.
Wheat is an essential crop to the Kurdistan Region.
Kurdish officials have encouraged the growth of the tourism sector, as its oil-dependent economy looks to diversify.
