Biden intends to nominate a Kurd as US ambassador to Egypt
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The White House on Wednesday announced that President Joe Biden intends to nominate a Kurdish-American woman as his country’s ambassador to Egypt.
“Today, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Herro Mustafa Garg to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Arab Republic of Egypt,” said the White House in a statement on Wednesday.
Herro Mustafa Garg was born in Erbil in 1973. Her family fled what is now the Kurdistan Region due to Saddam Hussein’s regime’s oppression, residing in the United States. She has served as the US ambassador to Bulgaria since 2019. The diplomat has also held several senior positions in American embassies in Lisbon and New Delhi.
She speaks nine languages, including Kurdish, Arabic and Farsi.
“Her family story is the subject of the documentary film, American Herro, and in 2021 she was honored by the Carnegie Corporation as one of the Great Immigrants of America,” read the statement.
She will succeed Jonathan Colen who left the position in August 2022.
When she was nominated as US ambassador to Bulgaria in 2019, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described her as a person with an “amazing life story,” adding that she was an “exceptional diplomat, wonderful person.”
