Ukrainian soldiers train for another battle against Russia
BAKHMUT, Ukraine - Ukrainian soldiers are training on the ground with German machine guns and American anti-tank missiles, preparing themselves for another battle against the Russian military.
Around 70 soldiers from the Bakhmut frontlines have returned to the training ground, reorganizing and working with new weapons such as the BMP-1, a Soviet-era fighting vehicle.
German machine guns and US anti-tank missiles are among the weapons being trained.
Gelos, a senior sergeant, has returned from Bakhmut for a week and will return to the front after a short break.
“Our troops have surrounded half of Bakhmut and heavy fighting continues there,” he told Rudaw on Tuesday. “We don't know what will happen, but we hope everything will be better.”
Roman, 22, an operator of an anti-tank weapon, is the youngest soldier in the group and has been on the frontlines of the Russian-Ukrainian war for nearly nine months.
“On my last assignment when the explosion occurred, I was driving a BMP van and my assignment was to transport people, I was searching for people in the early morning until 3 pm but then I was injured by the sound pressure of the explosion and I was taken to hospital,” Roman said.
More than 40,000 from the war-battered eastern oblasts of Donetsk and Luhansk have been evacuated to safety in the center and western parts of Ukraine.
According to the latest information from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, seven square kilometers in the direction of Bakhmut have been recaptured from Russian forces in the past week.
Earlier this year, Ukraine requested the US to provide it with the Patriot missile defense system to protect itself against Russian projectiles. Around 100 Ukrainian troops arrived in the US around later to begin training on the Patriot batteries.
