Kurdish Karate Kid has Olympic dreams

ASTANA – Nine-year-old Rodi Mustafayev won gold at the FSKA World Karate Tournament in Portugal in November.

His family – Kurds who immigrated to Armenia from Turkey 100 years ago and are now living in the Kazakh capital – are proud of his determination and success.

His mother, Almina Mustafayeva, remembers the moment she heard her son had won the championship in his age group in Portugal. “I was very delighted and my son made me very proud,” she said.

Rodi is now training for the 2019 championship and dreams that one day he will compete in the Olympics and will raise the Kurdistan flag there.
