Sulaimani church opens Alzheimer’s care center

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region - A church in Sulaimani has opened a care center for patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the first of its kind throughout the country.

Established by Mar Yousif church, the Mercy Mary center offers care to the patients free of charge.

“Those who have Alzheimer’s, or other old-age illnesses, need medications and special treatments that cannot be provided at home,” Kamaran Jalal, a doctor and medical officer at Mercy Mary Center, told Rudaw on Saturday.

“Therefore, we need multiple centers like this in Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok to provide care for Alzheimer's patients,” he added.

Ayman Aziz, a priest of the Mar Yousif church said that the center aims to “serve every nation and religion. Humans are precious in every single nation, ethnicity, and religion. This is a non-profit organization and we do not want to make a profit out of it.”

In addition to Alzheimer patients, the center also has a department dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of children with autism. Eighteen children are currently receiving care in the center.
