Turkish court hands life sentences to 3 family members for girl’s murder
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A Turkish court sentenced four people to jail for the murder of an eight-year-old girl from Diyarbakir, three of them are family members who were given life imprisonment, state media reported on Saturday.
“In the case of the murder of eight-year-old Narin Guran in Diyarbakır, three defendants who were detained were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment, and Nevzat Bahtiyar was sentenced to four years and six months in prison,” Anadolu Agency reported.
Guran’s body was found near a stream in Turkey’s southeastern Kurdish province of Diyarbakir (Amed) after a 19-day search, sparking protests and raising suspicions over the circumstances of the Kurdish girl’s death.
Twenty-four people were arrested, including members of Guran's family. Her father, brother, uncle, and cousins were among those detained.
Her mother, uncle, and brother received life sentences for “intentional murder against a child.”
In September, Bahtiyar, then identified only as “Nevzat B,” confessed to authorities that he was tasked by Guran’s uncle, the chieftain of the village, to dispose of the girl’s body, Turkish media reported at the time.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in September vowed to “ensure that those who murdered Guran are brought to justice.”
