Numerous civilians killed and injured in explosion in northern Syria’s Gire Spi
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A number of civilians in northern Syria’s Gire Spi (Tal Abyad) were killed and injured on Tuesday in an explosion that hit a market in the border town with Turkey, Syrian media reports.
The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported that “a suicide bomber blew himself up in the city of Gire Spi in front of Adliya building in front of a vegetable store, which caused a number of casualties in civilian bystanders,” according to a local source who spoke the outlet, not specifying the number of dead and injured.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported “three people killed” and “seven injured” in the attack.
It’s not clear yet whether “the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber who blew himself up with an explosive vest or by the explosion of an IED” planted in the area, added SOHR.
North Press agency, affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), reported it was a “suicide bomber” that blew himself up in a gathering of residents “killing a civilian and wounding four others.”
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
A statement released by the Turkish province of Sanliurfa - which borders the Syrian town - governor's office blamed the attack on Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
No statement has been yet issued by the PKK regarding the accusation.
Ankara and its Syrian proxies launched a military operation against the Kurdish-led SDF that controlled the north of the country in October 2019, seizing control of a stretch of territory including Sari Kani and Gire Spi.
Sari Kani and Gire Spi now lie at opposite ends of a resulting ‘buffer zone’ under the control of Turkish-backed militias.
In a deadly car bomb last July, at least six people were killed, including three children, and wounded 15 others in in Gire Spi, according to SOHR.
