Suspected Israeli airstrikes target Syria’s Baniyas: Monitor
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Suspected Israeli airstrikes targeted a private residence in Batraya, in the southern outskirts of the city of Baniyas on the Syrian coast, killing one, a war monitor reported on Friday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor, reported “three loud explosions” in Batraya as a result of “airstrikes believed to be carried out by Israeli aircraft.”
The attack targeted a villa inhabited by individuals allegedly affiliated with Iran-backed militias according to SOHR, resulting in the death of one of the group’s members, and significant material damage to the residence. The victim’s nationality remains unknown.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have not claimed the attack.
Israel on Wednesday carried out several airstrikes on Damascus, the Syrian defense ministry said, adding that the attacks resulted in material damages. SOHR reported that at least two were killed in the strikes.
At least two Hezbollah members of Syrian nationality were killed and six were injured in the strikes, according to the monitor.
Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its 12-year civil war, often claiming to strike pro-Iran militias, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah group which supports the Syrian army.
While it rarely comments on strikes attributed to it in Syria, Israel has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate its arch-rival Iran to gain a foothold there.
