Rojava forces continue anti-ISIS operation inside al-Hol camp
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdish forces in northeast Syria (Rojava) on Thursday continued their operation inside al-Hol camp in Hasaka province, inspecting tents of Islamic State (ISIS) suspects who were captured days before the territorial defeat of the group in the country.
Last week Rojava’s internal security forces (Asayish) and the United States-allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with the support of the global coalition against ISIS, launched the third phase of Operation Humanity and Security, conducted inside the notorious al-Hol camp which houses thousands of ISIS family members. The new operation comes as a response to an increase in ISIS activities in the camp.
The Kurdish forces on Thursday continued the operation inside the camp which houses 45,355 people, mostly women and children. Camp residents come from around the world, but the bulk are 21,633 Syrians and 17,022 Iraqis, according to the latest figures from the US-led global coalition against ISIS.
On Thursday, the tents of Syrian suspected members of ISIS who were captured in the group’s last Bastion, Baghouz, when the city fell under the control of the SDF in 2019, were inspected, reported Hawar News Agency (ANHA).
The first phase of the military campaign was launched in March 2021 and the second one in August 2022. Hundreds of ISIS suspects were detained in both phases.
The camp has been branded a breeding ground for terrorism, with authorities describing it as a “ticking time bomb.”
In late December, the SDF announced the killing of a senior ISIS official in the camp.
