Iraq, Kurdistan Region leaders congratulate UN chief on second term
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The presidents of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region on Saturday congratulated United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on his reelection as head of the body.
Iraqi president Barham Salih praised his leadership and “wished him success in his work, and in helping to overcome the great challenges currently confronting our world” according to a tweet from his office.
President of the Kurdistan Nechirvan Barzani also tweeted his congratulations and said he looks forward to “continuing our close cooperation to address challenges facing the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the world.”
On Friday, Guterres was reappointed for a second five-year term as the UN’s Secretary General. He said he is “deeply honored and grateful” to be serving once again.
His first term began in January 2017.
