ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq signed five memoranda of understanding with Czechia on Thursday to enhance cooperation in oil, transportation, and security, as Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani invited Czech companies to participate in Iraq’s Development Road project and enter its energy market.

Sudani emphasized the friendship and cooperation between Iraq and Czechia, more commonly known as the Czech Republic, during a joint press conference with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala in Prague.

“Iraq is committed to strengthening trade and economic ties with the Czech Republic, leveraging Czech expertise across various industries,” Sudani said.

Sudani and Fiala oversaw the signing of five agreements across multiple sectors including oil, transportation, and security.

“Today I welcomed Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the Prime Minister of Iraq. We discussed industrial cooperation in the aviation sector and the possibility of Iraq supplying oil to the Czech Republic in the near future, as well as other topics,” Fiala said in a post on X.

Sudani also presented Fiala with an opportunity to participate in the Development Road project, particularly in railway construction, road networks, and the planned industrial cities along the corridor.

The Development Road project is planned from southern Iraq to the Turkish border, connecting the Persian Gulf with Turkey. It aims to enhance Iraq’s geopolitical position, boost the economy, and create thousands of job opportunities.

“Czech companies have been invited to enter the Iraqi market, which plays a significant role in the global energy sector,” Sudani said.

Earlier in the day, Sudani met with Czech President Petr Pavel, reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to promoting peace and ensuring security through cooperation with regional and international partners. Pavel welcomed Sudani’s visit as a foundation for strengthening relations and establishing serious partnerships, according to Sudani’s office.

Sudani also held meetings with Czech aircraft and oil and gas companies to explore partnerships. Additionally, he met with Czech Parliament Speaker Marketa Pekarova to discuss enhancing legislative cooperation.
