ISIS takes Tikrit-Kirkuk road, killing 7 Iraqi soldiers

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region-In an operation against Iraqi security forces on Thursday Islamic State (ISIS) militants captured the main road connecting the cities of Tikrit and Kirkuk, a military official said.

The Salahaddin governor Raed al-Jibouri told Rudaw that the militants launched their attacks with seven car bombs followed by an assault on the security forces.

At least 13 ISIS militants and seven Iraqi soldiers were killed in the confrontations.

Several areas and villages east of Tikrit were also reportedly taken by the militants.

“Several members of the Iraqi security forces were killed and injured,” said the governor. “The fight is ongoing and Iraqi warplanes bombed the ISIS positions and managed to re-control several areas.”

Iraqi security forces backed by Shiite militia reclaimed the city of Tikrit from ISIS last March.
