Iraqi PM Sudani kicks off official visit to Czech Republic
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Thursday took off to the Czech Republic on an official visit, his office stated.
“Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani departs for Prague on an official visit to the Czech Republic,” a statement from his office read.
Baghdad and Prague enjoy good bilateral ties, particularly in the humanitarian and military sectors. The Czech Republic provided Iraq with multiple rounds of weapons in its years-long fight against the Islamic State (ISIS), which erupted in 2014 after the group seized large swathes of territory in the country’s north and west.
Prague further dispatched more than a 100 troops to Iraq as part of the US-led global coalition against ISIS. During the same period, a number of Czech humanitarian organizations also brought relief to war-torn parts of Iraq, particularly the northern city of Mosul, the second largest in the country and a key ISIS stronghold at the time.
Iraq and the Czech Republic maintain embassies in their respective capitals. Prague has further been represented in the Kurdistan Region through a consulate general since 2006.
