Top Iraqi court extends electoral commission term
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council on Wednesday extended the term of the country’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) for two years.
The council decided “to extend the term of the members of the board of commissioners for the current session for a period of two years,” read a letter from the council The extension runs from Tuesday until January 1, 2027.
The letter stated that if the Iraqi parliament has “a different political vision,” it can amend the law related to the IHEC.
Imad Jamil, head of IHEC’s media team, told Rudaw that the commission has received the order.
This marks the third time the commission mandate has been renewed, with parliament having approved the first two.
The IHEC supervised the Kurdistan Region’s elections held on October 20. Iraq’s parliamentary election is expected to take place later in the year.
