US urges accountability for Khor Mor drone strike
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The US Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday denounced the recent drone attack on Sulaimani’s crucial Khor Mor gas field, urging Iraqi authorities to hold perpetrators accountable.
“We condemn the attack on the Khor Mor gas field and urge the Government of Iraq to hold the perpetrators accountable,”
On Sunday, the gas field came under a drone attack but the strike did not cause material damage or casualties, according to Kurdistan Region’s natural resources ministry. Sulaimani-based Kurdistan Special Counter-Terrorism (CTG) blamed "militia groups and outlaws" for the attack.
The UAE-based Dana Gas, which operates the field, said on Monday that it is in contact with the local authorities to ensure the operations continue safely following a drone attack on the field.
The field has frequently been attacked by rockets and suicide drones in recent years and the Kurdish authorities have blamed Iran-backed militia groups.
On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani directed the formation of a technical committee to investigate the attack, according to a statement from Iraq’s Security Media Cell, which added that the strike "resulted in a minor fire near the fuel tank affecting it."
Khor Mor field produces 452 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, according to Dana Gas. The gas is a key fuel source for electricity generation plants in the Kurdistan Region.
