Iran's judiciary bans Telegram
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iran’s judiciary has ordered the closure of messaging service Telegram, effective Monday.
IRNA reported the Tehran Public and Revolutionary Court made the decision after receiving numerous complaints calling for Telegram to be closed and because the site had “illegally entered into Iran’s cyberspace.”
It also claimed Telegram had given terrorist groups “suitable room for illegal activities,” alleging ISIS militants had used the platform when carrying out deadly attacks on the Iranian parliament and the Imam Khomeni mausoleum last year, and it had been used recent during anti-government protests.
Tehran had cancelled Telegram’s licence last week.
